How to thread a Singer sewing machine? Methods and Precautions to Thread a Singer Sewing Machine

Singer Sewing Machine

A singer sewing machine is one of the most popular machines in the world. Almost everyone knows how to use this kind of machine because it was used by their mom or grandma when they were young. However, you might not know that there are many ways to thread your singer sewing machine. That’s why I’m going to tell you some methods on how to do so!

There are three major types of singers sewing machines:

Each type has different steps for threading, but all have two things in common:

Even though these procedures are similar, it doesn’t mean that’s quick since every step is straightforward, but your time is valuable, so let’s get started!

First method

For the first method of threading your machine, you’ll need to attach your spool pin. Use it on the furthest right hole of the tension dial. Put the thread through the spool pin and pull it down to place it on either side of the thread guide (at the back of the machine). Push the spool pin up until it clicks into place. Now that you’ve attached your spool pin, you can thread both upper and lower looper threads. Take a look at these steps:

  1. Pull out the ‘thread take-up’ lever.
  2. Directly under needle eye, make sure there are two holes side by side; the left is for upper looper thread, and the right is for lower looper thread.
  3. Look at the stitch plate; there are two metal hooks on each side of the needle clamp. These hooks catch upper and lower looper threads when you sew.

After checking these steps, your machine should be threaded in no time because it’s just like following a picture guide! If you’re not confused by now, then come on, let’s do this!

  1. For upper looper thread: Guide the line in the left hole and slowly pull it out until it comes out of the right spot.
  2. For lower looper thread: Guide the line in the right hole and slowly pull it out until it comes out of the left hole.
  3. After doing this, run your upper looper thread through the take-up lever. Then secure it by pushing the thread into the hole of the tension dial.
  4. Weave your lower looper thread through both metal hooks on the stitch plate, then bring it to the take-up lever and push it in the same way you did for the upper looper thread.
  5. Now, pull both upper and lower looper threads until they come out from either side of the machine’s needle bar. By doing so, you’ve threaded your singer sewing machine! Yay! But wait, before putting everything back together, let’s do one more step.
  6. Run your machine without fabric to make sure that everything is appropriately threaded. If not, then try repeating the steps one more time.

Second method

For the second method of threading your sewing machine, you’ll need to attach your spool pin and drop feed dogs (you can do so by pushing down the lever located on the front part of the machine). Like I mentioned before, two metal hooks inside the stitch plate will catch upper and lower looper threads when you sew. So let’s take a look at what you need to do to thread it:

  1. Insert your spool pin into the hole directly under the ‘needle eye.’ Make sure that spool of thread is resting on either side of the ‘thread guide’ (behind needle plate). Grab onto both ends of the thread; pull towards yourself until it comes out from behind the needle plate.
  2. Start with upper looper thread: guide both ends of the thread into either hole on the side of the machine located just under the presser foot. Pull it until it comes out from the opposite hole.
  3. Weave your lower looper thread through both metal hooks on the stitch plate, then bring it to the take-up lever and push it in the same way you did for the upper looper thread.
  4. Now, pull both upper and lower looper threads until they come out from either side of the machine’s needle bar. By doing so, you’ve threaded your singer sewing machine! Yay! But wait, before putting everything back together, let’s do one more step.
  5. Run your machine without fabric to make sure that everything is appropriately threaded. If not, then try repeating the steps one more time.

What is the Singer sewing machine’s typical stitch setting?

Set the timer to use straight stitching with a 3 to 3.5mm stitch length. Use a SINGER Topstitching Needle in size 90/14 or dimensions 100/16 for moderate or thicker fabrics, respectively.

Precautions:

The singer sewing machine has been around for over 100 years, and there are still people using them today. This is because they are simple, reliable machines that have never had a large number of problems. The only real downside to the Singer sewing machine is that it does require special needles to use correctly, but these can be found at any store which sells sewing supplies.

Before using your singer sewing machine, a few precautions should be taken to make sure it is in good working order. One of the essential parts of the Singer Sewing Machine is the bobbin case. This must be in good condition when attempting to sew with it, or else stitches may become loose, and the machine could even jam. If this happens, it can be very frustrating and time-consuming to get back up and running.

If the bobbin case is in good condition, you should next make sure that your needle is also in good condition. Before using a Singer Sewing Machine, try putting a sewing needle through it to ensure no bends or breaks in the syringe. If it is broken, bent, or has a large hole in the eye of the needle, it will need to be replaced before you can use your Singer sewing machine. Once you have done that, change out all of the other needles since they may not work with your new needle.

Next, make sure that the foot pedal is in good condition. Some of these are made of plastic, so they will break if handled roughly. It might be a good idea to have a backup foot pedal on hand just in case it breaks while you are sewing with your Singer sewing machine. The final thing you should do before using your singer sewing machine is threads the bobbin and the top of the sewing machine. This will prevent numerous problems and can be done in just a few minutes with a little bit of practice. Once this has been completed, you should be ready to get started using your Singer sewing machine!

FAQs

What is a singer sewing machine?

A Singer Sewing Machine is a machine sewing device, first built by the Singer Manufacturing Company in 1851. They are used for creating sewn items such as clothing and home decor products like curtains and tablecloths. The first models were hand-cranked but evolved into battery-powered electronic machines in the late 1960s and 1970s.
Most modern electronic machines are computerized and can be operated with a foot pedal or, less commonly, a hand-held remote control. Singer’s durable products and legacy of innovation made it world-famous in the sewing industry and among collectors.
